Traditional Mortise and Tenon Joinery: Why We Still Do It the Old Way

In an age of mass production and quick fixes, The Joinery Workshop remains committed to the time-honored craft of traditional mortise and tenon joinery. But why do we insist on these centuries-old techniques when modern alternatives exist?

Strength That Stands the Test of Time

The mortise and tenon joint has been the backbone of quality woodworking for over 4,000 years and for good reason. This interlocking joint creates an incredibly strong connection that actually becomes more secure over time as the wood settles and adjusts to its environment. Unlike screws or metal fasteners that can loosen or corrode, a properly crafted mortise and tenon joint can last for generations.

Recent Project Spotlight

Last month, we completed a stunning set of five-bar field gates for a rural property in Cannock. Using traditional mortise and tenon construction throughout, each gate was hand-crafted from sustainable European oak, selected for its natural durability and beautiful grain patterns. The joints were cut entirely by hand, ensuring perfect fit and finish that machine production simply cannot match.

“The attention to detail is extraordinary,” commented our client. “You can see the craftsmanship in every joint, these gates will outlast anything we could have bought off the shelf.”

The Process Behind the Craft

Creating mortise and tenon joints requires patience, precision and years of experience. Each mortise (the rectangular hole) must be perfectly aligned with its corresponding tenon (the protruding piece), with tolerances measured in fractions of millimeters. Our craftsmen use traditional chisels and marking gauges, tools that have remained virtually unchanged for centuries.

This meticulous approach takes longer than modern joinery methods, but the results speak for themselves. The joints are not only stronger but also more aesthetically pleasing, with clean lines that showcase the natural beauty of the timber.

Our Overall Commitment

As we move forward, The Joinery Workshop remains committed to preserving these traditional skills while embracing sustainable practices. We’re currently working on a series of bespoke garden furniture pieces that will demonstrate how classical joinery techniques can create modern, functional designs for today’s outdoor living spaces.
